ESOS assessments need to be done every 4 years, so it has compliance periods, or phases, with deadlines for organisations to comply by.

To comply with ESOS, organisations that meet the requirements need to notify the EA that they are compliant and then carry out a full ESOS assessment before that phase deadline.
When Is It Needed?
All phases and deadlines are highlighted in the table above.

Organizations who meet the requirements for ESOS need to notify the EA and comply with ESOS by the Phase 3 deadline.
Why Is It Needed?
The scheme aims to reduce larger business's impacts on the environment by requiring organisation's to have on-site Energy Audits to evaluate the energy consumption in their buildings, their industrial processes and any use of transport used to help identify viable energy saving opportunities and measures. These businesses also need to keep any records of their compliance and notify the Environmental Agency (EA) that they are compliant with ESOS, and that they have taken or are taking an ESOS assessment.
