What Is It?
ISO, or the International Organisation for Standardisation, is a non-government organisation that provides standards for businesses to follow that can help improve quality and IT management, but also energy and environmental management. The standards that we focus on provide management system frameworks for businesses to follow.
ISO provides many different standards, but the two we focus on are:

14001
ISO 14001 is a standard created that can help businesses deal with and improve their environmental performance by providing a framework and requirements for an environmental management system. The aim of this management system is to provide a structure to help a business improve their environmental impact and to help them comply with any government requirements they may need too. By implementing this, a business can also show that they are dedicated to reduce their environmental impact.

ISO 50001 is a standard that provides a framework for a management system, however this standard helps businesses deal with their energy management and energy efficiency. The aim of this energy management system is to help a business develop a policy to improve their energy efficiency as well as provide data to help make informed energy improvements. This can help a business save money on energy costs as well as improve their carbon reduction and decrease any waste.

Who Needs It?
These ISO standards are applicable to any organisation regardless of its size or nature. Any organisation can choose to be certified to or implement them - some organisations may choose to implement the standard just for its benefits, but others may choose to get certified to it.

Why Is It Needed?
ISO standards allow for guidelines to be put in place for businesses to follow to monitor and improve upon their energy and environmental management. This can be used to see how much energy a business uses and where money could be potentially be saved, and also how they are impacting the environment. It allows businesses to identify ways in which they can improve their usage and save on costs.
